4 Things Yulisa Learned from Her Own Acne Journey

Our very own Medical Aesthetician, Yulisa, is graciously sharing her experience with acne. Read below to find out about her acne journey, how it shaped her career, and one piece of advice she wants those struggling with acne to know.

1: How did it start?

"My acne started super early, around 12 years old. It was painful cystic acne on my face, chest, and shoulders. It did have an impact on my self-esteem. I remember a classmate thinking they were bug bites. It also hurt to wear a bra because the straps rubbed against the breakouts on my shoulders and back. That’s one thing people don't talk about enough when it comes to acne: it can be painful. I totally understand how feeling uncomfortable in your own skin is exhausting.”

2: When did things start to improve?

"When I was in high school, I didn't really have access to high-quality skincare or professional support. My mom dealt with bad acne too, so her mindset was just, 'This is normal and a part of life.” But “This is normal” wasn’t a good enough answer for me. I became sort of obsessed with finding a solution. I watched YouTube videos, researched ingredients, and realized that I have a passion for how skincare works. I would genuinely be excited to learn about what you see under a magnifying glass when you looked at pores. This led me to realize that I want to go to esthetician school. It just felt so natural. I fell in love with the science behind it. I also started noticing patterns with my diet. Diet still is a huge trigger for me, and I notice that eating out a lot or highly processed food triggers a breakout.”

3: How has going through your own acne struggles shaped the way you support your clients/acne clients?

“Going through my own struggles absolutely influenced how I treat my clients today. When someone sits in my chair, I get it. I know the exact anxiety of trying a new product and being terrified it's going to trigger a massive breakout. And when I'm applying a product or doing a treatment, I already know how it feels (what's normal, what stings, and what to expect) because I’ve put my own skin through it all."

4: What's one piece of advice you’d share with someone dealing with acne right now?

"If I could give one piece of advice to anyone struggling right now, it’s this: Acne isn't something you 'cure' once and forget; it’s something you manage. And you have to give yourself grace and patience.”
